sigh… I know. Makes sense, right?

After 18 years in an agency – learning so much about websites, design, development – I felt great about my tech savviness. However, as I’m starting to learn while navigating the ins-and-outs of “entrepreneurism” and setting up my own online base of operations, the systems are easy enough to use, but harder to understand.

Let’s be honest, I know about DNS, MX, and TXT records. I thought I understood enough about domain management. And shockingly – I do know a lot (especially for a marketer) – but wow…

This is more than just a post, it’s a confession. Over the years, while talking to clients, I’m sure I’ve talked about all these things, but I don’t think I realized until today what a complete and total pain in the ass they can be. And they are. Big. If somebody thinks marriage can be work, try figuring out why your stupid email won’t verify your ownership of a domain. THAT, friends and neighbors, is a real pickle.

I won’t make this long. After all, once I get the theme installed, edited, and deployed, I may find that all these posts need to be migrated (yet another fun task from which I’ll likely get a healthy dose of humility) at which point I’ll simply call these my “trial musings” and delete them. However, I think it’s apropos at this time to send a note of appreciation and gratitude to a few groups of people.

To the colleagues and friends I have worked with – specifically developers and designers – thank you so much for doing all this stuff for me (and clients) in the past. Maybe you enjoy it? I always knew you guys were crazy, so it tracks. Unfortunately, I find it vexing (although, in a perverse way – who doesn’t mind a challenge now and then?) so I think it’s safe to say I have an even greater appreciation for all your work, insight, and support.

To the many (many… many…) clients I’ve served along the way, I’d like to express my sincerest apologies if I ever lost you in tech-speak. I think it’s likely an ailment that many in the industry eventually become afflicted with, but that doesn’t mean it’s excusable. I want you to know that I always tried my best to translate to plain English, and – for those who got REALLY used to me over the years this will be familiar – if plain language didn’t work, I’d concoct very straightforward metaphors.

However, as my recent 48hrs (ooooh… who doesn’t love “propagation”. sigh*) will attest, while knowing it, having a general knowledge of it, and even managing to navigate it with a minimal amount of stress (minimal I say in the fact that nothing crashed, I still have what’s left of my thinning hair, and I never yelled at the dog) is possible, it doesn’t make it any easier to like.

I’m not kidding. This was way easier to do when I just had somebody else to do it for me…
